The technical name is OCR — optical character recognition. In plain words: the computer looks at a scanned page, a photo, or a PDF the way you would, reads what's written on it, and types it into your system by itself. Drop in a supplier invoice and it becomes a record — amounts, dates, line items — with nobody retyping anything.

It also learns to tell documents apart: this one's an invoice, that one's a purchase order, this one's a bank statement — and files each where it belongs.
